Take a look at the photograph below.  This is an image of an empty dirt lot located adjacent to one of our shelters in the city of Placentia, CA. Colette’s Children’s Home is pleased to announce that this dirt lot as the site of our brand new playground, which will be built on one day, on October 30, 2010.  We are partnering with KaBOOM! and Pacific Dental, who are providing us the materials, funding, and many of the volunteers for this project.  Pacific Dental will also be bringing a mobile dental clinic to give the women, children, and neighboring residents free dental care the day of the build.

The census tract in this area is 84% low income, and there are few activities for the children in our shelters and the children in the neighborhood to participate in.  This playground will improve the entire residential community, and give everyone a safe place to play.  If you are interested in  volunteering your time on our Build Day, October 30,2010, please contact Janice Huerta at (714) 596-1380 or jhuerta@healinghomelessness.org to learn more about how you can help!

On February 20, Boy Scout Troop #316 led by Eagle Scout Project leader David Abraham devoted a full day of service at one of the Huntington Beach shelter sites. David planned his Eagle Scout Project to create shelving surrounding the interior of one of our storage garages. Not only did this build leadership skills within David and the rest of his Boy Scout Troop, it filled a huge need at Colette’s for more organized and streamlined storage. Upon completing this project, David said, “Ultimately, I am so blessed to have had the chance to change children’s lives.” Colette’s equally feels blessed by the dedication and hard work of David and Troop 316!

Thanks Troop #316!

During the week of Thanksgiving, Colette's Children's Home (CCH) residents celebrated a traditional Thanksgiving meal due to the generosity of many donors and volunteers.  At one shelter, 50 women and children were served meals prepared by volunteers from First Christian Church of Huntington Beach, led by Women’s Ministries Pastor Amber Turner. At another shelter, 40 women and children were served by the Act of Grace service group, led by Paul Orloff. A variety of activities were planned for the children, including cookie decorating, family pictures, and entertainment from Silly Sally’s.

CCH has continued to receive sentiments of gratitude from all of the women and children who were in attendance. One mother frantically searched for Pastor Amber, as she wanted to be sure to convey her heartfelt thanks to her and the women from First Christian Church before the volunteers left. According to this resident, she was “deeply grateful for all the work that went into serving one of the nicest Thanksgiving meals” that she and her daughter had in years.

During this season of thankfulness, CCH staff and residents are deeply appreciative of all the support from ours supporters and sponsors throughout the community. Without all of the support of all the gracious donors and volunteers, this special occasion would not have been possible.
